Social, Ethical and Legal Issues in Pandemic Preparedness and Response

EU-funded public health research

A systematic literature review examining ethical, legal, and social issues in pandemic preparedness, covering equitable resource distribution, individual rights versus public good, data sharing across borders, and impacts on vulnerable populations. Ten evidence-based recommendations were produced and validated with a multi-stakeholder group including public health agencies, epidemiologists, data scientists, and first responders.

Privacy, Social and Ethical Impact Assessment of a Pandemic Preparedness IT System

EU-funded public health research

An iterative Privacy, Social and Ethical Impact Assessment of a digital pandemic preparedness platform, covering its database, dashboard, predictive modelling tools, and data flows. Twenty-four risks were identified across ethical, privacy, and societal domains, with mitigation measures developed through consortium workshops and end-user interviews.

Evaluating a Public Health Prevention in Maternity Programme

Commissioned evaluation, NHS

A mixed-methods evaluation of a regional maternity public health programme covering perinatal mental health, reproductive health, breastfeeding, maternal healthy weight, and tobacco dependence in pregnancy. Combined analysis of routinely collected data, document review, and qualitative interviews with healthcare providers and parents. Findings identified programme strengths, implementation gaps, and recommendations for future commissioning and service design.

National Evaluation of Maternal Health Information Resources

National evaluation, Wales

A national evaluation assessing the implementation, dissemination, and use of maternal health booklets across Wales. Combined surveys, interviews, and focus groups with midwives, health visitors, and health board leads. Findings directly increased demand for the resources and informed strategic decisions at national programme level.

Geospatial Analysis of Community Pharmacy Access in England

Public health research, UK

Quantitative and geospatial analysis mapping the impact of NHS funding cuts on weekend pharmacy provision and patient access to medicines across England. Identified regional patterns of access loss across regions. Findings informed a national advocacy campaign and received wide coverage in national and specialist media, contributing to parliamentary and government engagement on pharmacy funding.

Barriers to Maternal Mental Health Service Access for Disadvantaged Women

Qualitative health research, UK

Qualitative research exploring barriers and facilitators to maternal mental health service access for women experiencing disadvantage in the North East of England. Involved interviews and focus groups with women from disadvantaged backgrounds and non-statutory service providers. Findings informed discussions on how statutory services can better reach underserved women.

Air Pollution Exposure Among Outdoor Workers at a UK Military Garrison

Peer-reviewed, PLOS ONE

A cross-sectional study measuring occupational exposure to nitrogen dioxide and ozone among outdoor workers at a major UK military base. Used static air quality monitoring with statistical analysis of daily and weekly variation. Identified significantly higher pollution levels during weekdays and outside temperature as a key predictor of ozone levels. Published in PLOS ONE.

Designing Accessible Maternal Mental Health Services: The MaMS Study

NIHR ARC applied health research

Applied health research, conducted with NIHR ARC North East and North Cumbria, exploring how maternal mental health services can be designed to be more accessible to women from underserved and minoritised backgrounds. Combined qualitative interviews and stakeholder engagement with service users, clinicians, and community organisations to identify barriers to access and surface design principles for more inclusive perinatal mental health provision.

Qualitative Research Support for the RAPIDE Project

EU Horizon Europe consortium

Qualitative research contribution to RAPIDE, an EU-funded Horizon Europe project developing tools to build resilience in healthcare provision during cross-border health emergencies. Work included qualitative study design, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge-sharing activities across the international consortium to inform how the project's tools and dashboards can be designed around the needs of frontline healthcare providers and patients.
